A group of friends has decided to spend a night in the woods, camping.
They gathered around the campfire to talk about their dreams and goals. However, the chatter is interrupted by a noise from the bushes immersed in the darkness behind them.
Then, all the friends are gone, and the only one remaining is called by a feeble voice from the woods, asking them to face their fears.
The Voice in the Wood is a psychological Role-Playing Game.
You are the Protagonist: the forest has chosen you, calling your name. You must go into the darkness, only equipped with a few items, and face your fears. What awaits you is a rite of passage, a journey from which you will return changed.
How… it will be decided by your choices and the rules of the game.
Inspired by Twin Peaks and Alan Wake, it was designed for the upcoming edited volume Roll for Learning: MicroTTRPGs to use in the classroom.
HOW TO PLAY
- To play The Voice in the Woods, you need groups of three players: one player is the Protagonist, who passes through the woods during the night, while the other two play the forest, challenging the Protagonist with physical obstacles and manifesting their most hidden fears.
- You will need two six-sided dice of two different colors, a piece of paper and a pencil, and an index card with an X written on it.
- The game does not require any particular procedures: the text guides the players step by step around the table, directly addressing the Protagonist.

There is zero reason to have 2 gamemasters at the same time. There is no rules for their different abilities or different goals. It will be cool, if the author will expands this idea in the future.
Two GMs mean having different points of view on how to present challenges and dangers to the protagonist.
Also, I really like to subvert the standard structure of role-playing games, which usually have a master and many players.
The 2 GMs is great idea, I agree. But there is no rules or mechanics or tools for GMs to make it something unique. You can, just, play DnD with 2 GMs, but there is also no reason for that. And in "The Voice in the Wood" there is nothing what 2 GMs can make better then 1 GM.
Don't get me wrong, the game is very good and fun for the evening, thank you for that! This is just a question that comes after the game in my group.
I agree; there is not a mechanical reason. However, during my playtest, the situations created by two GMs for only one character were very different, and they made for a distinct game experience. Thank you for your feedback, and I'm happy you enjoyed the game!
Can this be played solo or duet, Matteo?
The game looks really cool.
duet yes, solo not without hacking it, I’m afraid.
I understand. Thank you for the reply, Matteo.
Happy we got to play this earlier this week - a great experience where we really ‘attacked’ the characters’ fears!
Oh wow! thank you for playing it! I'm happy you enjoyed the game!
